Getting Started

Who can use ai.KMITL?

All KMITL students and staff with a valid @kmitl.ac.th email address can use ai.KMITL for free. You'll use your KMITL LDAP credentials to sign in.

Do I need a credit card?

No! ai.KMITL is provided at no cost for the KMITL community. You automatically receive 1,000 messages per month, and you can optionally add your own API keys (BYOK) for unlimited access.

How do I sign up?

  1. Visit ai.kmitl.ac.th
  2. Click "Sign In"
  3. Enter your KMITL username and password
  4. Your account is automatically created on first sign-in

No separate registration needed!

I can't sign in. What should I do?

Check:

  • Are you using your KMITL credentials?
  • Is your KMITL account active?
  • Have you changed your password recently?
  • Try resetting your KMITL password

Usage & Quotas

What happens when I hit 1,000 messages?

You can either:

  1. Wait for the monthly reset (1st of each month)
  2. Add your own API key (BYOK) for unlimited access

You can still view previous conversations, but can't send new messages until reset or BYOK.

When does my quota reset?

Date: 1st of every month
Time: 00:00 UTC (7:00 AM Bangkok time)
Amount: Back to 1,000 messages

The reset is automatic - no action needed!

Do AI responses count against my quota?

No! Only your messages count. AI responses are free.

Does message length affect my quota?

No. Each message counts as 1, regardless of length.

Can I buy more messages?

Not currently. Your options are:

  • Use the included 1,000 messages per month
  • Add your own API keys (BYOK) for unlimited use
  • Contact support to request more quota

Models & Features

Which AI model should I use?

For most tasks: Claude Sonnet (balanced, reliable)
For speed: Gemini Flash or Groq
For complex reasoning: Claude Opus or GPT-4
For long documents: Gemini Pro (2M tokens)

Can I switch models mid-conversation?

Yes! Just select a different model from the model selector. The new model will receive the full conversation history and continue from there.

Do different models cost different quota?

Standard models: 1 message = 1 quota unit.
Premium models: May consume more than 1 unit (see Quota Usage Comparison).

What's the difference between Claude, GPT, and Gemini?

  • Claude: Great at detailed explanations, code, following instructions
  • GPT: Excellent reasoning, structured thinking, reliable
  • Gemini: Long context windows, fast, multimodal

All are capable! Try different ones for your needs.

Does ai.KMITL have GPT-5?

Yes! We provide access to GPT-5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5.1 Codex, and other premium models for free (within your 1,000 message quota).

Features

Can I upload files?

Yes! You can upload:

  • Images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP)
  • PDFs
  • Documents
  • Code files

Maximum 50MB per file, up to 10 files per message.

Yes! You can enable web search in the tools toggle in the chat toolbar below the message input box. See Web Search guide for details.

How do I organize conversations?

Use Project Folders! Create folders for different topics (courses, projects, etc.) and organize your threads into them.

BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)

What is BYOK?

BYOK means adding your personal API keys from AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) to get unlimited access while paying only for what you use.

Why would I use BYOK?

  • Unlimited messages (no 1,000/month limit)
  • Often cheaper than subscriptions
  • Full control over costs
  • Latest models immediately

How do I get an API key?

  1. Sign up at the provider's website (e.g., platform.openai.com)
  2. Go to API Keys section
  3. Generate a new key
  4. Copy and add to ai.KMITL in Settings → API Keys

Is BYOK safe?

Yes! Your API keys are:

  • Encrypted at rest
  • Never shared or logged
  • Secure in transmission
  • Deletable anytime

How much does BYOK cost?

You pay the provider directly based on usage (per 1M tokens, as of November 2025):

OpenAI Models:

  • GPT-5 / GPT-5.1: $1.25 input / $10.00 output (cached: $0.125 input)
  • GPT-5 Mini: $0.25 input / $2.00 output
  • GPT-5 Nano: $0.05 input / $0.40 output
  • GPT-4o: $2.50 input / $10.00 output
  • o3-mini: $1.10 input / $4.40 output

Anthropic Models:

  • Claude 4 Sonnet: $3.00 input / $15.00 output
  • Claude 4 Opus: $15.00 input / $75.00 output

Google Models:

  • Gemini 2.0 Flash: $0.15 input / $0.60 output
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro: $1.25 input / $5.00 output (≤128k context)

Other Models:

  • DeepSeek V3: $0.27 input / $1.10 output
  • DeepSeek R1: $0.55 input / $2.19 output
  • xAI Grok 3: $3.00 input / $15.00 output

Privacy & Security

Is my data private?

Yes! Your conversations are:

  • Encrypted end-to-end
  • Not visible to staff
  • Not used for training
  • Stored securely
  • Owned by you

Can KDMC staff read my conversations?

No. Conversations are encrypted and staff cannot access message content without exceptional circumstances (legal requirement with notice).

Are my conversations used to train AI models?

No! Your conversations don't train OpenAI, Anthropic, or other providers' models. Your data stays private.

What happens if I delete a conversation?

It's permanently deleted from active systems immediately and purged from backups within 30 days. This cannot be undone.

How secure are my API keys?

Very secure:

  • Encrypted at rest with AES-256
  • Transmitted over TLS 1.3
  • Never logged in plain text
  • Access-controlled
  • You can delete anytime

Technical Questions

What browsers are supported?

Supported:

  • Chrome/Edge (latest)
  • Firefox (latest)
  • Safari (latest)
  • Mobile browsers (iOS Safari, Chrome)

Recommended: Latest Chrome or Edge for best experience.

Is there a mobile app?

Not yet, but the website works great on mobile browsers! Just visit ai.kmitl.ac.th on your phone or tablet.

A dedicated app may come in the future.

Can I use ai.KMITL offline?

No. ai.KMITL requires an internet connection to:

  • Communicate with AI providers
  • Sync your data
  • Enable web search
  • Process requests

What's the maximum message length?

There's no strict character limit, but very long messages may:

  • Take longer to process
  • Hit model context limits
  • Be less effective

Tip: Break very long requests into multiple messages.

Can I use markdown and LaTeX?

Yes! ai.KMITL supports:

  • Markdown: Full formatting support
  • LaTeX: Both inline ($$E=mc^2$$) and block math
  • Code blocks: With syntax highlighting

Usage Tips

How can I get better responses?

  1. Be specific in your questions
  2. Provide context
  3. Use clear language
  4. Break down complex tasks
  5. Try different models
  6. Enable web search for current info

Why did the AI give a wrong answer?

AI can make mistakes or "hallucinate." Always:

  • Verify important information
  • Use web search for facts
  • Test code before running
  • Cross-reference critical data
  • Ask for reasoning

The response was cut off. What happened?

Possible reasons:

  • Hit model's max token limit
  • Connection interrupted
  • Rate limit reached (with BYOK)

Solution: Ask the AI to continue from where it stopped.

Account & Billing

Is ai.KMITL really free?

Yes! Completely free for KMITL students and staff:

  • 1,000 messages per month
  • All AI models included
  • All features available
  • No hidden fees
  • No credit card required

What if I want more than 1,000 messages?

Use BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) to add your personal API keys for unlimited access. You pay providers directly based on usage.

Can I share my account?

No. Each account is for individual use only. Don't share your KMITL credentials.

Can alumni use ai.KMITL?

Currently, ai.KMITL is for active KMITL students and staff with working @kmitl.ac.th email accounts. Alumni access may or may not be considered in the future.

Troubleshooting

The website won't load

Try:

  1. Refresh the page (Ctrl+R or Cmd+R)
  2. Clear browser cache
  3. Try incognito/private mode
  4. Try a different browser
  5. Check your internet connection
  6. Check [status page] for outages

Messages aren't sending

Check:

  • Are you at your 1,000 message limit?
  • Is your internet connection stable?
  • Are there API key errors (if using BYOK)?
  • Try refreshing the page

Web search isn't working

Verify:

  • Is web search toggled on?
  • Is your query something that needs web search?
  • Try rephrasing your question
  • Check if there are service issues

File upload failed

Possible issues:

  • File too large (max 50MB)
  • Unsupported file type
  • Connection interrupted
  • Browser blocking upload

Solution: Try a smaller file, supported format, or refresh.

Platform & Service

Who maintains ai.KMITL?

ai.KMITL is maintained by KDMC (KMITL Data Management Center, สำนักบริหารข้อมูลดิจิทัล).

When was ai.KMITL launched?

We began alpha testing in September 2025, with the full launch expected before 2026.

Will ai.KMITL always be free?

We're committed to keeping ai.KMITL free for KMITL students and staff. The included 1,000 messages/month allowance is planned to remain.

Can I use ai.KMITL for commercial purposes?

ai.KMITL is intended for educational and personal use by KMITL students and staff. For commercial use, consider using AI providers directly.

Is ai.KMITL open source?

Not currently, though some components may be open-sourced in the future.

How can I provide feedback or suggest new features?

Will there be new AI models added?

Yes! We regularly add new models as they become available. Check announcements for updates.

Yes! While the interface is currently in English, all AI models support Thai:

  • Analyze Thai documents

TIP

Most models support the Thai language; however, using English is recommended for optimal results. The majority of training data is in English, and AI performance is significantly better when prompted in English.
