Project Folders
Project folders help you organize your conversations by topic, course, project, or any category you choose. This guide covers everything about creating and managing folders.
What are Project Folders?
Project folders are organizational containers for your chat threads. Think of them as:
- 📁 Directories for related conversations
- 🏷️ Tags for categorization
- 📚 Notebooks for different subjects
- 🗂️ Projects for specific work
Why Use Folders?

- Keep related chats together
- Find conversations easily
- Separate work from personal
- Group by course or subject

- Quick access to relevant threads
- Better context management
- Cleaner interface
- Easier collaboration
Management:
- Bulk operations on related chats
- Archive completed projects
- Share folder content
- Export organized data
Creating Folders
Method 1: From Sidebar
- Click "+ New Folder" button in the left sidebar
- Enter a folder name
- Optionally add a description
- Click "Create"
Method 2: From Current Chat
- Click the folder icon (📁) in the current thread
- Select "Move to new folder"
- Name your folder
- Click "Create"
Method 3: Settings
- Go to Settings → Folders
- Click "Create New Folder"
- Fill in details
- Save
Folder Naming
Use clear, descriptive names like "Math 101", "Research Project", "Work Tasks", or "Learning Python"

Currently, ai.KMITL supports:
- Top-level folders only (no nested folders)
- Multiple threads per folder
- Unlimited folders (within reason)

Each folder has:
- Name: Display title
- Description: Optional details
- Created date: When it was made
- Thread count: Number of conversations
- Last activity: Most recent message
Managing Threads in Folders
Moving Threads to Folders
From the thread:
- Open the conversation
- Click the folder icon (📁)
- Select destination folder
- Click "Move"
From the sidebar:
- Right-click on a thread
- Select "Move to folder"
- Choose the folder
- Confirm
Removing Threads from Folders
- Open the thread
- Click the folder icon (📁)
- Select "Remove from folder"
- The thread moves back to main list
Non-Destructive
Removing a thread from a folder doesn't delete it - it just moves it to your main thread list.
Creating Threads in Folders
Option 1: Start new chat in folder
- Open a folder
- Click "+ New Chat"
- The new thread is automatically in that folder
Option 2: Move after creation
- Create a new chat anywhere
- Move it to the desired folder
Folder Operations
Viewing Folder Contents
- Click on a folder name in the sidebar
- See all threads in that folder
- Click any thread to open it
- Filter or search within the folder
Renaming Folders
- Right-click on folder name
- Select "Rename"
- Enter new name
- Press Enter or click away
Or:
- Click the ⋮ (menu) next to folder name
- Select "Edit"
- Update name and description
- Save changes
Deleting Folders
Careful!
Deleting a folder doesn't delete the threads inside - they move back to your main thread list.
To delete a folder:
- Right-click on the folder
- Select "Delete folder"
- Confirm deletion
- Threads are moved to main list
Archiving Folders
Archive folders you're not actively using:
- Right-click on folder
- Select "Archive"
- Access archived folders from Settings → Folders
Folder Views
Sidebar View
- Compact: Shows folder names only
- Expanded: Shows thread count
- Detailed: Shows last activity
Change view in Settings → Appearance
Folder Page View
When you open a folder:
- Grid view: Tile layout of threads
- List view: Detailed list with previews
- Timeline: Chronological order

Good folder names:

Avoid:

- ❌ "Untitled"

Regular Maintenance
Weekly:
- Move new threads to appropriate folders
- Archive completed conversations
- Delete unnecessary threads
Monthly:
- Review folder organization
- Consolidate similar folders
- Archive old projects
Semester/Quarter:
- Archive old course folders
- Create new folders for new courses
- Clean up completed projects
Thread Naming
Within folders, name threads clearly:
- "Homework #1 - Derivatives"
- "Bug: Login not working"
- "Essay Draft: Climate Change"
- "Code Review: API module"
Searching Within Folders
Folder-Specific Search
- Open a folder
- Use the search box
- Results show only threads in that folder
- Filter by date, model, or content
Global Search
Search across all folders:
- Use main search (Ctrl+K / Cmd+K)
- Enter your query
- See results from all folders
- Filter by folder if needed
Troubleshooting
Can't create folder?
- Check if you've hit any limits
- Ensure folder name is valid
- Try refreshing the page
- Contact support if issue persists
Thread not showing in folder?
- Check if it was moved elsewhere
- Search for the thread
- Refresh the folder view
- Check "All Threads" view
Folder disappeared?
- Check Archived Folders
- Use search to find it
- Check if accidentally deleted
- Contact support for recovery
Folder Limits
All accounts share the same limits:
- Unlimited folders (reasonable use)
- Unlimited threads per folder
- Standard features included
